I have also documented cinema halls possessing an old-world charm which, in some cases, has an historical relevance in the modern developmental context. While this may not be immediately apparent to the average cinema-goer, it is to be hoped that my documentation will contribute to a wider appreciation of these architectural assets.
My study is
inspired by the pure visual treat of cinema hall
spaces and their changing cultures.
Discovering spaces within spaces is something
in which I have been particularly interested.
I have tried to focus upon people’s interaction
with and within these spaces. This exploration
has in many situations been an essentially intuitive
process. Hoardings create an atmosphere. People
interacting with those hoardings create a story.
It has been of particular interest to me to seek
out and document cinema halls where hand-painted
hoardings are still being used. I have also tried
to photographically compare examples of cinema
hoardings produced by the two different techniques,
i.e., hand-painted and digitally printed.
I have tried to document cinema halls in and around
Delhi as well, focusing on the quite considerable
number as yet unknown to the great majority of
the public. Of further interest are the many cinema
halls presently lying closed and quite a few of
the early cinema halls which have already been
permanently closed down.
